Events

The Royal High School has been a focus of Edinburgh life for centuries and as such has attracted many visits from celebrities, hosted many events and seen many other notable (and less notable) occasions.    These photographs represent a small selection of them, varying form the very important to the very casual, some taken on school premises and others in a variety of locations

Lord Provost George Grubb entertains Jim Ford MC at the City Chambers, 12th March 2008.   Club President Alastair Allanach also appears 1729 ATC at RAF Leconfield, 1963 with Lightning aircraft. 1957-58 School Captain Ian S Brown with his Vice-Captain Pringle Fisher.    One of a series of photos from the Weekend Scotsman RHS feature of June 7th 1958l Another photo from the Weekend Scotsman feature shows Art Master Shand Hutchison (still a member of the Scottish Arts Club teaching sketching skills to Robert Purves, David Boyle and Lesley Milne Shand Hutchison in good form on his 90th Birthday.   He is seen here in the garden of his Regency bungalow in Portobello during his 90th Birthday party in July 2011.   He looks just the same as in the photo on the left.   Shand sadly died  in April 2015
A Copy of the School History dated 20th July 1950.    G.L.O. Bell was the Master leaving.    According to Jim Dignall (who entered the Senior School in 1949) he taught Maths.   Lots of notable names appear! 196-67 Pipe Major Stewart ably supported by Pipe-Sergeant Chris Crossley and Drum-Sergeant Ian Forrest RAF Dishforth, 1962: Flt Lieutenant Smerville ably supported by Colvines and Lang RAF Chivener, 1964.  1729 ATC summer camp.    Flt Lieutenant Ireland assisted by Flt Sergeant Lang, Sandy Colvine, Bruce Skivington and others William Wilson, the artist responsible for the Memorial windows working on them in 1949 The School History Committee, 1997

The Great Tapestry of Scotland

This mammoth project features over 150 panels describing 12,000 years of Scottish history.   The panel shown depicts the 1871 (first) Scotland versus England rugby match, played at Raeburn place.   The only try of the game was scored by RHSFP rugby player Angus Buchanan, who is featured in the centre of the panel.   The finished product, reputedly the largest in the World is due to be hung in the Scottish Parliament in Autumn 2013

Dr Alexander Adam, celebrated Rector of the High School 1786 -1810, was honoured with a reception on the bicentenary of his death.   Held in the newly refurbished Edinburgh University Library, speakers included a direct descendant, and the individuals who curated a splendid exhibition of Dr Adam's and other contemporary artefacts.
